That means that you are throwing out the opposite side of the person that is seaking information. For example, if you are in a legal case trying to prove your point, the defending attorney would counter you to have you look at things in a different light. Thats playing the devil’s advocate.

It means that you are taking the opposite side of a discussion. For example, you are having a discussion about smoking. The other person is against smoking. You are the devil’s advocate and take the position that you think smoking is a good thing even if you don’t believe it. You would be the devil’s advocate.

Usually people refer to themselves as “playing the devil’s advocate.” This means they are expressing a point of view which they do not truly agree with, but they feel it helps the discussion to consider a different perspective. If someone says YOU are playing the devil’s advocate, I think they believe you must not be sincere about the position you are expressing in some matter and that you are deliberately taking an opposing view simply to stir up an argument.

In the bible the devil is also known as the “adversary”. Devils advocate is one who chooses the other opinion (regardless of good or bad, right or wrong, simply in opposition). I say “it is day” and you, as devil’s advocate, say “for the sake of argument lets say that it is night”.
