It’s acceptable in any document (including legal) provided the abbreviations are defined in a separate section up front or “on the fly” before they are used further into the document. So a legal document would have something like
Definitions
The XYZ Computer Company hereinafter referred to as XYZ
Or another document might have ” with respect to the company’s Quality Management System (QMS)”.

Abbreviations are very rarely used in formal writing. Their use is only appropriate in special circumstances in which brevity is at a premium, such as in footnotes.
