Before the internet, it was possible to obtain college credit by doing coursework and sending it through the US Postal mail for grading. The entire course was done that way.

Very few places do correspondence anymore with the introduction of the internet. Those that do, you should be wary.

Correspondence has been around much longer, as the communication is done by snail mail. Either may count toward a degree, but check with the institution from which you expect a degree for specific requirements.

With an online course, you usually do the work on your computer. Correspondence courses, which were the roots of online schooling, consist of materials and assignments that are sent to you through the mail.
