Before the internet, it was possible to obtain college credit by doing coursework and sending it through the US Postal mail for grading. The entire course was done that way.
Very few places do correspondence anymore with the introduction of the internet. Those that do, you should be wary.

Correspondence has been around much longer, as the communication is done by snail mail. Either may count toward a degree, but check with the institution from which you expect a degree for specific requirements.

you can also do some self study courses where you just study the required reading etc and then go test and get your credits that way that’s how it works with excelsior college in New York Its what i am doing right now i will get my associates degree in nursing this way …
