You are doing it. Or, you could read and maybe enhance your life and your knowledge.

The obvious thing is to read, since that can take you off into other worlds. However, if that isn’t your thing, what about:

1) Teach yourself to play a musical instrument.

2) Get a tape and teach yourself a foreign language.

3) Build or fix something around the house.

4) Learn to cook and make dinner for your family.

5) Plan a home business from which you could make some money.

6) Get some exercise equipment and work out.

7) Make Christmas presents for your family and friends.

8) Decide to become an expert on some topic and research it online extensively.

9) Learn about genealogy and develop your family tree.

10) Develop your dreams. If you have always wanted to travel, for example, develop detailed itineraries for the trips you want to take some day.

11) Write letters (!!!) to some other lonely person; an elderly relative in a nursing home, for example, or a pen pal in another country.

I’m home alone alot, but have more to do than I can shake a stick at. But then, I’m 49 and have lots of responsibilities. Do you have computer solitaire? That will burn lots of time. More productively, perhaps you could learn to garden. There are vegetables you can grow year-round, and it’s very rewarding. I guess it depends on where you live. Learn to cook. There’s something that always pays off. Not only does it kill a lot of time for you, it will be greatly appreciated by the rest of your family. And it sure will come in handy when you get out on your own. If this appeals to you, get a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. Great recipes! And you’ll also burn some of that time cleaning up the cooking mess.

I read a lot. Many things that people have no interest in I have read so much that it is a great feeling when people come to me to get a question answered. I also draw and sketch religiously. Our boys are 11 and 13 and they are better artists now than when I was their ages. Draw anything you can think of. No matter how bad it may look to you, you can always improve upon it later.

Help your parents around the house. It’ll sure give them another way to look at you when they see you doing laundry, dishes, and mowing the lawn.
