It’s a gizmo called a “ballistic pendulum”.
It gets used to teach stuff like “momentum” in science classes since how ever many balls swing “in”, the same number will swing “out”. Even if you swing more than half of the balls “in”, it still works.
Kind of a neat thingamajig.
