A BFA is designed to prepare you to either work in the field as an artist, or else to go on for your MFA. You can get a BFA in dance, in theater, in studio art, in music, and in other subjects that are performance or studio related.
In general, if a student isn’t 100% sure that they want to be a professional in an art field, I either suggest they look at doing a BA in the field, rather than a BFA, or do a BFA but in a university, rather than an art school or conservatory. In that way, if they change their mind, they have options.
I know many BFAs who work as graphic designers, in electronic arts, as painters, as textile designers, as costume designers, as sound engineers, as actors, as dancers – again, the BFA prepares you to work as a professional in that field. It’s therefore not seen as quite as flexible as a BA.
