What was your Worst college experience?

What is your worst college memory/experience? Was there a certain person, group, or professor that made your life a living hell? Have you ever felt like you were treated unjustly, disrespected, misunderstood, or that you just plain didn’t fit it? Do you believe in the myth that college is the best years of your life? Have you been repeatedly unlucky with friends, classes, or romantic relationships? Has your pain/misfortune lasted for longer than a few months?

I had a professor who used to give us exam statistics (average, median, etc.) sorted by gender and ethnicity, as judged by her. She would go on and on about how much smarter the female students were than the males, and then similarly… go on and on about characteristics she thought she observed in particular ethnic groups.

I objected to this sort of thing and was thrown out of class. …after every exam. The upper-level administrators didn’t seem to care either. Horrible woman.

I don’t have an opinion either way on college being the best time of your life. I spent most of mine working. But the worse experience I ever had was a meeting with a psychology professor and my interim advisor when he stated: “you obviously aren’t a very good student, you should quit school and do something domestic with your life.” He was dead serious – he said this same thing to two or three other women too. His reasoning for me obviously being a poor student was the one D that I had the previous semester and the fact that I was getting C in his class(A’s and B’s otherwise). That really pissed me off and got me down a bit for a while. But in the end in my mind he was an idiot – we had to write a prospectus on what we would study and how – it was an assignment we were given all semester to do. I was going to drop his class after his sexist comments so I didn’t do it. I decided not to drop and wrote the entire 25 page paper in a weekend – including my research – I got an A on the paper and his comment: “you obviously put a lot of work into this paper”. I graduated with honors and have a great job now. I am glad I didn’t let his comments bother me for too long.

My very first class in college was English 101. My professor showed up about 15 minutes late and said, “I want to tell you two things upfront. First, I hate English, and second I hate teaching.” She also informed us that she was starting her own business next semester so that she could “get out of this dump.” Needless to say my classmates and I were quite stunned. As it turned out she wasn’t joking, She spent the entire semester telling us how lousy each of us was at writing. She even pointed out individuals who were worse than the rest (my paper was unfortuately one of these chosen ones). I eventually made it through it all and ended up with a “B” in the class, so I guess it wasn’t too bad.

That time that I missed my final exam because I thought it was scheduled for three days later. I found out through Blackboard when my solid A was downgraded to an F. Fortunately, the professor knew my reputation and I had a solid record in the class, so she let me make up the exam.

college can be different depending the kind of person & student you are. to some it can be a rigorous life style with a lot of studying & homework to do for others it’s a lifestyle of partying & having fun……you choose. my worst experience was almost not passing my calculus II class (it’s hard as hell) & my best experience so far are the friends i met in class who i hang out with regularly & study with sometimes.
