What universities, American or others, are strong in graduate anthropology programs?

In other words, if you are interested in cultural anthropology, and wish to focus on matters of gendered division of labor among the contemporary Maya, you must apply to programs with faculty members with whom you might study those areas. You would want to make sure there was at least one Mayanist on faculty, and at least one cultural anthropologist who does work on gender and labor. The same would apply if you were interested in linguistic anthropology, and wished to focus on northern India — apply to programs with linguistic anthropologists whose methods you admire, making sure there are also Indianists on staff.
You may wish to begin your search by looking up several anthropologists you admire (who work in your area of subspecialization), and seeing whether the universities at which they teach have graduate programs. If not, find out where they received their PhDs. This method will help you make a list of schools to which to apply.
Best wishes to you!
