what type of tree…?

for english i am writing a story that involves a long description of a tree. so far i have said that it is big and old with soft leaves and willowy branches. in the story someone will also carve their initials in the trunk of the tree so it needs to be quite thick and hard. does anyone have any ideas of what type of tree this is i am describing? also what types of trees do people normally carve their initials into? please help!

It would have been an idea to decide what tree it was first then describe it rather than find a tree to fit your description….

There’s a list of weeping trees here:

For your willowy branches.

If you paste the latin names into an image search you’ll be able to see what they look like and decide which one best fits your description.

Beech is the tree that best fits your story. People carve them because they have thin bark and scar very quickly so initials will stay there forever after they’re carved.

It also grows very big and has soft leaves and a spreading canopy. If you want the sort of weeping look that willows have maybe you should pick European Beech. It has the same type of bark but generally has more willow-like branches than other types of Beech trees.

How about a lemon scented tea tree (Leptospernum Petersonii), then you can talk about the scent of the leaves as well.
