Chances are that, at any university you go to, there will be many opportunities to attend orientations of different sorts. Your dorm building will probably hold an orientation, your department will probably hold an orientation, the student union will probably hold an orientation etc. There will be other students there who have trained for months on how to help you best, and this is their goal.

Each of your classes on the first day will go over everything that the professor expects, all your assignments, and what you need to do to pass the class.

Now, something that is particular to your situation would be the event that took place there this past year. Because the situation at Virigina Tech is so unique, there are some things that no one will be able to predict ahead of time.

The best advice I can give you is be flexible. You have lots of time to get the college routine down. Everyone gets a little confused, or lost, or mixed up in the beginning, and thats ok. Learn from all your experiences, and you will graduate a much better person.

most colleges do a first week orientation for the incoming freshmen where you get dragged to a bunch of events to get to know the campus better. The programs generally suck but you have to do it. Also its a good way to meet a bunch of other freshmen in your class.

As for your first day of classes, most professors will hand out a syllabus and basically read it to you. On some occasions I have known professors to just delve right into the class material without even handing out a syllabus. Those classes are always funny because students are like wtf is going on. Most of the time the professor will post all class material (including syllabi) on blackboard if they use it.

Expect lots of ice breaker type activities. Be prepared to have homework on the first day of class and to stay the entire time. Professors don’t like to waste a precious minute of lecture time. Be prepared for very little sleep and lots of new experiences.

First day will be a lot of syllabus reading, probably have some assignments due before your next class meeting time.

It really depends on if you are living on campus or not.
