Hiyas!

I know at some point NEA had a payscale summary broken down by state. I’m not sure if it’s up to date, but I found something similar on this link:

http://www.nea.org/student-program/about/state.html

You say you are going to go where the money is after you graduate, so I’m gonna persume you know about each state’s certification requirements and licensing?

This link is the 50 state’s certification requirements.

Good luck!

You won’t be making a lot as you must know going into education, but I would say Connecticut or New York and after that it would be California. If you’re trying to move to California with a credential from another state, good luck finding a job. You won’t have the courses required to be licensed in this state. The only state I know California has reciprocity with is New Jersey.

The highest paying states for teachers are Connecticut, New Jersey and California. California is also one of the hardest states to get credentialed in but I am not sure about Jersey and Connecticut. This also changes on a yearly basis, so you may want to make a decision on where to teach based on where you would want to live more than just where you will make the most money.

I am a teacher and I can honestly say Connecticut by far pays the highest. Even more specifically, it depends on the district you teach in.

There are a lot of job openings for middle school and high school, especially math, science, and English. Elementary Education is the hardest to find a job in.

Good luck in school! It is a great profession! 🙂

Then go somewhere besides teaching!

Looking at salary schedules from different states and districts is very misleading. Districts with the highest cost of living usually pay more in dollars, but when it comes down to the buying power of those dollars, they may be in the middle of the list or lower. In other words, what $100 will buy in Beverly Hills is a lot different from what $100 will buy in Mississippi.

You have to do your homework and take into consideration a lot more than numbers on a salary schedule.

Definately look at the cost of living where they pay the most. If a studio apartment is $1300/month then it’s not worth it to make $200 more a month………

Also, look at insurance benefits. Some school districts pay 100% of the insurance premiums while others pass all of the premium onto the employee ($500+/month).

When you look at salaries, also look at cost of living. Base saleries in Minnesota are very good and rural areas are cheap to live in.

If you want to go where the money is, you shouldn’t have become a teacher.
