What should I major in at Wellesley college if I wish to pursue a career in journalism?

I know Wellesley offers majors in English as well as International Relations which some people major in and then go into Journalism, but I didn’t know if anyone else had other suggestions. Thanks!

I would advise you to major in anything you really love — as long as that major helps you to develop strong writing skills.

There are religion journalists, sports journalists, international affairs journalists, business journalists, fashion journalists, health issues journalists, science journalists, etc. Knowing something about the “beat” you wish to cover (along with extremely strong writing skills) will get your foot in the door for many journalism opportunities.

I went to school with quite a few folks who are now prominent (and even award-winning) journalists and editors, and their majors were diverse: English, Religion, Political Science, Economics, History, and Biology, to name the ones I can remember.

Bottom line: Do what you love, the rest will follow.

Best wishes to you.

Depends on the type of Journalism you are interested in. You could try political science or many other subjects. A lot of schools even have Journalism as a major, but I would think you would still want to minor in something that could take you in a specific direction.

Psychology would be high on the list I think.

Also Spanish or Russian — but only if you’re going to work hard enough at it to be completely fluent.

I’d major in English and take all possible electives in psychology, myself.
