“Give in” is less drastic, less final…it is a way of saying you’ll yield on something. Example: “She gave in and let the stranger buy her a beer.” or, “If you give in to your boss’s request, he’ll probably appreciate it.”
“Give up” is more permanent…”Give in” means you’ll back off on something more transitory. Using them together in one sentence: “The lazy student gave up and decided to give in to his teacher’s request to finish his homework.”
To give in is to surrender to a feeling, a craving, an over-powering sense of discouragement, to allow something to happen that is against your better judgement due to not having the strength. will-power or self confidence to stick to your beliefs..basically, relenting to something or someone.
For example – “I was so sure that I would never see him again, but in the end I just had to give in to the deep, unrelenting pain in my heart”
To give up is to lose hope, to see no way of carrying on and bowing down to a sense of hopelessness and self doubt. Giving up is losing all determination and deciding that what you were fighting for is not worth the effort or is not physically/emotionally possible for you to achieve. Giving up is also used when leaving something, quiting something, you can give up something such as a bad habit (smoking) or give up something because it is the right thing to do (giving up someone you love for certain reasons)
For example – “I made a promise to myself that I would go the whole way, but when I saw how hard it would be, I had an over-powering desire to just give up.”
or
“When I found out about my heart problem, I knew I had to give up smoking for good.”
To give in is to yield to another’s wish or opinion – or to consent reluctantly.
To “give up” would mean to quit trying – usually for good.
give in means ‘to be allured, attracted’.
