The difference is essentially one of thickness, with railroad board (more commonly known as bristol board or bristol paper) being the thicker. Bristol paper is made by layering or laminating papers together to the desired thickness (.006″ or thicker). The name comes from Bristol, England, where the paper was originally made from rags. Bristol paper is used for catalog or paperback book covers, file folders, tags, tickets, wedding invitations, etc.
