What’s the big deal about the Catskills?

A lot of American TV shows have people say “I spent a year in the Catskills” as a way of showing off or people are impressed by it. What does this mean and why is it a big deal.

The Catskills are the home of many family resorts that catered to upscale Jewish families. It’s known in show biz circles as “The Borscht Belt.” Many famous Jewish comedians such as Rodney Dangerfield, Henny Youngman, Joey Bishop, Jan Murray, and the like either got started or made their names there.

The Catskills were a quick and easy get away for many, mostly Jewish people, from NYC. In addition to the ‘Borscht Belt,’ the Catskills are sometimes called the ‘Jewish Alps.’

There used to be a lot of resorts in the Catskills. I don’t know if there are many anymore. I know that Grossinger’s, the best of them, closed.
