What’s the best student credit card?

I’m headed off to college this August, and I’d like to find the best low interest, no or low APR credit card with a reasonable amount of cash limit. Anyone have any suggestions?

The best strategy is to get a rewards credit card, funnel all/most of your normal spending through it, and pay you balance in full every month. That way you build your credit quickly, avoid interest, and earn rewards.

If that’s your strategy, then you’ll want to get the student credit card that will pay you the most (in rewards) for your normal spending profile. You can use this rewards calculator to quickly determine the best card for your spending:

One of the best student cards is the Citi mtvU card. I wish I could get it for the 5% rewards at restaurants, movie theaters, etc. Use the calculator to compare it to others like the Citi Driver’s Edge for Students, etc.

Check this website for comparison between student cards and tons of useful information, such as who is best suited for the card. Student cards generally have high APRs because they are aimed at college students who don’t have any credit history. I just found out, though, that my College Visa card through my bank, Wells Fargo, has a great APR for a student card (13.9%), plus a pretty high starting limit for someone with zero credit ($800, and increase to $1100 after 2 months). You may want to check if your bank has any credit cards. The only downside to Wells Fargo is its poor rewards program, which I have to pay for, but I’ve obtained other rewards cards that I’ll use for rewards and keep this one for its low APR.

All the offers you see with 0% or low APR are only introductory or teaser rates to get you to sign up. Look at the fine print; they usually have a range of APRs you can qualify for. The thing about getting your first card (or any card, for that matter) is you won’t know exactly what the APR and credit limit are until you are approved.

Best wishes for college.

I recommend the Chase student flexible rewards card. APR is high for student credit cards so it is a good idea to always pay your bills in full every month.

None really.

If you work to pay it off then get only one

Amex or any low apr visa and mastercard that usually is offered with your own personal bank being cheapest apr.

Dont go hog wild!

Spend only what is needed and remember its not free money, you must work to pay it off.
