What Major should I pursue?

I will be starting my first year of college pretty soon. I enjoy computers so a major in some kind of technology might be good. I have been told that I am a good salesman and have good people skills. I have been told Engineering might be a good field. My bro majored in management information systems and had trouble finding a job because everyone required experience he is now a high school BCIS teacher and coach. I want a major that shouldn’t be that hard finding a job when finishing college. I live in Texas (San Antonio, Corpus Christi area) Can anyone give me any kind of helpful information? .

Just what we need, more programmers.

I dont know what the world does with so many programmers, everybody wants to be one. I barely purchase any software at all (thank god for piracy) and even if i did my food bill would still be 100X larger than my “software bill”.

Why are so many farmers struggling while programmers make 150.000 a year? How do you guys get the money?

My god… and with the colapsing economy and everything around us, what are you going to do with a computer science degree once the lights go out? Study agricultural engineering.

Yo. I’ll be starting college soon myself. One thing that I think you should stay away from is a business major. That is a very crowded field and makes it very challenging to get a job or have a career when graduated. If you love computers than I suggest you find some sort of degree involving computers whether it be engineering or what have you. Just follow your heart man and you’ll still have a few years to change your mind. The first couple of years are mainly GE(general education) courses so don’t sweat but still, don’t completely blow it off. You need to plan your future.

If you like computers you’re in luck. This field has so many specialties and there are more developing every day. Another hot field is BioTech which is expected to keep growing for the next 20 years. I would suggest getting your computer science or IT degree and then see if you want to get a masters and specialize in a particular area. You are located in a great area for a computer major. There are lots of impressive companies located in the San Antonio region.

Whatever you decide to do, the world is forever changing and so is everyone’s minds. You may be interested in just one or two career fields now, but you may change your mind down the road. One major that is the universal one…the one that applies anywhere, is BUSINESS. All career fields recognize Business as a usable major…no matter what you are getting into. Best of luck!

Engineering offers the highest starting salary for the lowest input of education received! Sales is always good, if you’re good at it, because you can make lots of money, but I’d say start with the Engineering degree & then do sales WITHIN the field!

My advice is too do some independent study on colleges you are thinking about going to , as well as some self discovery, and not rely on the advice of total strangers on Yahoo! Messenger to make some of the most important decisions of your life.

That’s like asking , should I have a baby? Get married?

I’m just saying we need to know a LOT more about you, like know you for months or years, before helping you make a decision like that. Talk to your parents, since they are probably going to be paying anyway. (jk)

So don’t rely on advice from total strangers for something this important. But I guess that would apply to my advice as well. Damn.

i always recommended to my kids and others facing this dilemma, that you should enjoy what you do for your job. it is much easier to be excited, motivated and to get out of bed each day if you are enjoying what you do. also most positions require experience, so utilize the deans, job placement people, etc. at your college for placement after graduation.
