As I recall, it was written to please Cesare Borgia, the tyrranus duke of Valentinois and Romagna (1476 1507). Cesare was the son of Pope Alexander VI by Vanozza dei Cattanei. He was ruthless tyrant, and Machiavelli, who had been driven from Florence by the rebellion, wrote the volume to please the murderous thug. The thesis of the book is entirely consistent with the type of government favored by Borgia. Borgia made Al Capone look like Mary Poppins. The man gave cruelty a bad name.
Some historians believe that he died of poison at the instigation of his father, the Pope, who could have played Buggsy Morran.
Actually, Machiavelly prefered democratic republics and wrote on the topic, but he recorded reality: it is good if a prince is obeyed because he is loved, but it is safer and preferable that he should be obeyed out of fear.

He wanted to help and support the Italian Crown and the person in charge at that time was the Prince. His book was like a motivational Common Sense or Art of War type of book. Are you reading it for AP Euro, because I read that same one 2 years ago. It is a boring book and hard to get through be want you get to chapter 20 its all down hill from there. Reading is good but if you still don’t understand the book go to sparknotes.com.
