What is the best way to approach a speech about yourself?

I have an upcoming speech in my toastmasters club. It is a 5 min speech about myself. I find this so hard. I just do not know how to approach this speech. What should I say about myself? I really do not want to talk about my career because thats boring or how I even got to it. Has anyone done a speech on themselves? What did you talk about?

Remember when I did that. You must be new. Normally the “Self Introduction” in 5 mins is the first speech assignment.

Don’t worry about the 5 mins. It might seem long but you’re likely to blow past it (most ppl do!)

My suggestion

a) Start off with your name and where you’re from. Tell the audience you’ll like to share 3 things about yourself – 1. What you like 2. What you don’t like and 3. What you hope to be.

1) What you like (eg. hobbies, movies, books, etc.). Pick something that gets you interested and excited. It’ll help get your mind off the jitters and the audience will receive the excitement from you.

2) What you don’t like (eg. snakes, traffic jams, long queues,etc.). Pick a common paint point so the crowd could connect and identify with you. Avoid any sensitive issues like politics even though you might feel strongly about it.

3) What you hope to be (eg. astronaut, ballerina, book writer,etc..). Everybody has hidden aspirations. Knowing what someone else’s dream is always interesting.

b) Close by thanking them and would like to know them more yourself!

Try to keep each item short and sweet. As I said you’ll find the 5 mins fly by quickly so briefly touch on it and move on.
