teach for america takes college graduates that usually are not certified to teach and puts them in an inner city or rural area to teach for a couple of years to earn their certification while making some money.

You just need a bachelor’s degree in something you can teach, and then you just apply. Most colleges get people from it to recruit, so if you can’t find them, just ask a school of education department at a university.

They place you, so I don’t think you can always dictate where you go, you can go to Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and all kinds of other places, but you might be able to request a top three or something. You usually don’t make the actual teaching salary too, you get like 20k a year, but you get certified through doing it.

My school district is in a poverty striken area of the delta. We have teachers from the Teach for America Program every year. The requirement for participating is to sign a commitment for two years to teach in an urban or rural district. The website is teachforamerica.org, it can explain more. I know there is like 70 hours of training that you must commit to after being accepted as a candidate.

To the first poster, our district pays full teacher salary to TFA volunteers, depending on teaching experience. 🙂 They get the same benefits that we get along with other options.

Those that do not have a teaching degree can go an alternative route and teach. This program is also for those districts in a poverty area that has a teacher shortage.

I hope this helps. 🙂
