what is penal lore?
I just saw con air…the following quote got my attention…
“Well, it’s not difficult to surmise how Nathan here feels, and my own proclivities are well-known and often lamented facts of penal lore. What I’m wondering is why you have any opinion on it at all.”
so…what is penal lore?

penal relates to punishment and lore to what is handed down verbally in the form of stories or historical anecdotes.So it boils down to stories of punishment.

Penal, as in relating to the punishments of the legal system, would lead one to believe it is prison lore, and the context satisfis this. So, it is, in essence, prison lore, or better yet prison legend.
