what is obstectrics?

Obstetrics (from the Latin obstare, “to stand by”) is the surgical specialty dealing with the care of a woman and her offspring during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (the period shortly after birth). Midwifery is the equivalent non-surgical specialty. Most obstetricians are also gynaecologists.

The term ‘obstetrics’ means:

“The branch of medicine dealing with childbirth and care of the mother”.

It is a medical term and is normally associated with birth and childcare.

Doctors who are specialised in both pregnancy and child birth are known to possess the degree of DGO,Diploma in Gynecology (The branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and hygiene of women) and Obstetrics.
