They’re the same thing.

“Vacation” is an american term for the time spent on a pleasure trip. “Holiday” is the equivalent term in the UK.

However, “holiday” in the US means a day set aside for a specific purpose – christmas, independence day, memorial day, etc. Most people won’t have to work that day, but some will, of course.

In America a holiday is when there’s a special day set aside for something – Christmas, Fourth of July, something like that – it’s a day when we celebrate something specific. There are generally picnics, parades, presents, or something like that. A vacation in America is when you or a group of you go somewhere, to do something fun, for an extended period of time (could be a few days, could be a month or two.) As far as I’m aware, in Europe a holiday is the same as a vacation here in the states. I’m not sure what the word is for a celebration day there?

In the US (maybe other areas) a vacation is a break from work, and usually involves going somewhere different and fun. For example, “my husband is taking a week off work for vacation and we will be going to the beach.”

A holiday is a special date on the calendar, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, things like that. A holiday can be celebrated in many ways and can involve a day off from work as well.

But in some countries, holiday is used to describe a vacation.

example: “Our family went on holiday to the country for a week.”
