What is context (rhetoric)?

Is context background information on the subject your reading about? Like what has happened prior to what was written that influences it’s meaning? Examples of context would be greatly appreciated.

the context of a piece of writing includes: the period in time in which it was written; previous events connected to the piece and also people’s view points at the time of writing.

For example. In their context the events described in 16th century writing were normal events. Being read out of context in modern times, the events seem out of date and archaic.

context is the actual writing. like if there is a subject and u have a question about it, they say ‘check the context”. that means u look at the actual text to see the details, how it was written, etc…..versus the idea it is writing about.
