Being nautical in nature, I have to give it up to the dude who said it’s the name of the highest sail on a tall ship. However, not just Clipper’s. Any sail unfurled that is higher than the 3rd layer is technically a moonraker. Quaint sayings about why they stole some extra speed from the moon at night.

Moonraker is the name of a James bond movie starring Roger Moore.

The name comes from Wiltshire in England.
Apparantly there were a group involved in shipwrecking and smuggling who hid their loot in a pond.
They were retreiving it one night when customs officers found them.
The smugglers pointed to the moons reflection, and claimed they were trying to rescue the moon from the pool.
The story goes that the customs men just assumed they were all simple minded and left them to continue what they were doing.
