A bachelor’s degree in education plus a “fifth year”, including subjects like CA history, technology in the classroom, the integration of Special Ed students into your class, and health.

You need a Bachlors Degree in any major. After that, you have to get your teaching credential. In your multiple subject credential program, you will get certification to teach ELL students as well. You will get what’s called a preliminary credential. When you get a job, you will then have to do some sort of program where you are mentored and take classes (sometimes called BTSA, Beginning Teacher Support and Assesment). After two years of that, you will get your clear credential.

Your credential will allow you to teach in any K-6 public school classroom. If you want to teach at a private school, then I don’t believe you need to have a credential at all.

If you do decide to get your credential, do it after you have Bachelors Degree. Teachers get paid on based upon the amount of units they have after Degree and a credential program is 30 sememster units. Good luck.
