I think this depends on the country you are planning on working in. In western countries the market is competitive and professional enough to require education degrees.

In most of Asia and a lot of the rest of the world any BA degree is useful and all that is required. However while the salaries for entry-level positions are lower continued contracts completions and remedial study programs like CELTA or Trinity which can lead to Diploma levels will improve your choices and income as well as professional position.

The vast majority of native English ESL instructors are BA degree holders from western universities. However most are not career oriented. As a result there are always plenty of positions.

A four-year degree in a teaching field and special training in ESL is the older way. Now, some colleges offer a degree just for ESL teaching.
