It is called a ’tilde’ and in different languages it changes the pronunciation of a letter that already has its own. For example, in Spanish, a tilde placed over the letter ‘n’ makes the pronunciation change to ‘nyah’ instead of ‘nah’. The word espanol has one over the ‘n’ to make it sound like “es-pan-yol” rather than “es-pan-ol”. I hope this helps.
