It’s by Miguel de Cervantes, no stranger to disappointment himself, and from “Don Quixote.”

It’s been too long since I’ve read Don Quixote to remember the context, but I believe it means that Man tries to reshape God in his own image and bases too many of his actions and expectations on what he thinks God wants him to do and on what he believes God ought to do for him.

But, God is what he is, that’s where Yod Hay Vay Hay comes from. And, He has His own agenda–so we often end up being disappointed.

A good example is Jesus. The majority of Jews had some very clear and specific ideas of what a proper Messiah ought to be. When the Messiah they got wasn’t the one they wanted, they just couldn’t deal with it.

Reading Terry Pratchett’s “Small Gods” will make a lot of this clearer. It deals with the largest religion on Discworld, whose God has a million followers–and one person who actually believes in him. He manifests to that one follower in a very disappointing form. It’s a work of Fantasy, but told from a good knowledge of history and some pretty sound theology.

It is similar to “Man proposes, God disposes”

It means we mortals can say something WILL happen but ultimately it is up to “God” (be that fate, nature, destiny or whatever force it is that is bigger and better than us) will be the ultimate decider of whether it happens or not.

This quote seems to think that our plans won’t happen.

well i’d say…god’s ways are much higher than your ways.

all a man’s way seems right to him but motives are weighed by the lord.

you want this, you want that..everything but god only sees your motives why you appoint this person or whatever. it will always come down to your main motive why your doing it.

Man chooses his own, but God does not always do things the way we expect Him to.
