It means “a generation removed”. So your first cousin once removed would be your first cousin’s kid. I think. I always get confused, but I know that once removed means a generation removed.

A cousin once removed is the child of your cousin or your parent’s cousin. It’s a one generation difference. Your children and your cousin’s children will be second cousins.

Generational difference. For example My first cousin’s child and I are first cousins once removed (one generation difference between us). My first cousin’s grandchild and I are first cousins twice removed (two generations difference between us)

Once removed means they were someones sister or cousin etc. And that someone got divorced and then remarried.

That she is of a different generation – so like your mom’s cousin, or your cousin’s child.

And twice removed would mean a cousin of your grandparents etc.
