when ppl are “hitting the road” then i think it means they are about to go and start a new life..like u just got kicked out of ur parents house…or u just got fired and u literally “hit the road” since u have no place to go. and this is like “hitting the index” becuase in the “index” or the world there are many places you can go and many choices you can make…but u just have to find the right thing you are looking for in your life.

To hit the road, just means you are going to leave as in ” I am going to hit the road now.”

Not sure about this one but I think it means,traffic passing through towns and districts.
