What do I need to major in to be an ob-gyn?

I’m a sophomore in high school (or at least I will be this fall), and I want to be an ob-gyn when I get older. The only problem is I have no idea what to major in, and minor in to accomplish this. I want to go to a university, and I certainly have the grades to do so, but I see no classes that look like you’d take them to be an ob-gyn. I searched on collegeboard.com to see if it would be any help, but it gave me nothing–literally. Any help would be amazing. Thanks in advance.

First you have to pick an undergraduate major. Truthfully, you could pick any major you want, but you will probably want to pick something like bio-science or something similar.

Usually during your senior year of college you will take the MCAT, which is a test for students who want to go on to medical school. Your grade on this test is very important, as well as your grades in school.

You also need to apply to a medical school. You usually start to do this during your senior year as well. But if you want to get a head start, you can begin checking out schools during your junior and find out what their requirements are. Usually you can apply and your acceptance will only be granted upon graduation and when they get your MCAT scores.

So that was a long way of saying, for right now, just pick a science major and you will have taken the first necessary step!

Good luck!

You will need a lot of science courses and some humanities courses. You can major in anything, the medical class at my school is 85% something other than biology and chemistry. Take the MCAT early….at the end of your sophomore year. Begin looking at the schools you are interested in now so you can be a few steps ahead in knowing what they look for in the selection process. Also try to take at least 12 hours of difficult courses each semester after you complete 3 consecutive semesters so you will know how much stamina you need for medical or any other health professional school.

Once in medical school, your performance and scores on many tests will determine if you rank high enough to become an OB/GYN. Work hard and study smart!

Hope this helps!

You need to be pre-med. You don’t choose your specialty until way down the line, so it doesn’t matter right now that you want to be an ob/gyn. Just take what you need to take to get into medical school–I would imagine a major like biology or something like that.

Undergraduate you should take some science courses, especially biology. There aren’t undergrad courses in ob-gyn — you have to go to medical school for that. See what majors medical schools want, then take them.
