Syphilis

But why would you be surprised ? Syphilis is just a sexually transmitted disease, and back in those times, there was no cure for it like we have today. An actual “cure” for syphilis wasn’t available until the wide spread manufacture of penicillin, just after WWII.

It’s probably just as prevalent today, the only difference is, we can now treat it.

Syphilis, typhoid fever, or mercury poisoning – then a treatment for syphilis.

I could be totally off the mark, but I wonder if it was mercury poisoning due to treatments for syphilis.

Syphilis. And it shouldn’t surprise you. There were no antibiotics back then. A shot of penicillin could have cured him.
