What Creature Is This?
The Vikings would take the tusks from this creature and sell them. They were believed to have magical powers and ancient Europeans actually believed they were from the legendary Unicorn and had magical healing powers.
They were so valuable that they were worth many times their weight in gold. In the 16th century Queen Elizabeth purchased one for 10,000 pounds (the value of a castle in those days!) and used it as a scepter.
What creature did these tusks come from?

There is a creature that lives in Arctic waters called a narwhal that grows a tooth extension about six feet long. it is a small pygmy whale and lives in pods. It’s tooth (horn) was often passed off as a unicorn horn.

The people answering Narwhal are correct. In fact, the often very beautiful horn or tusk of this small whale is a rather unusual tooth.

it is a narwhal. a type of sea creature that truly does exist. people associated it with the unicorn due to the fact that it had a large horn sticking out of its head, resembling a unicorn that lives in the water

Elephants, or some say Mammoths. I personally believe they thought they were mystical creatures, but were in all actuality Elephants. Hope that helped.
