You might want to wait until you get into college to buy your computer software. Many companies offer educational discounts on software that you can buy through your school’s bookstore or software office after you are a student.

Most likely, you’ll want to have the Microsoft Office set of programs, but I would recommend the basic Office, not the professional version. There are some good free programs these days that you can download, which do basically the same thing. Look for OpenOffice.

Your professors will inform you about any special programs you’ll need for any classes, and these will likely be available for purchase at the bookstore also.

Maybe you could just wait until you have been in school for a while and see which programs you have been using when you do your assignments on the school computers, for example. That will give you a better idea of which programs you need and prefer to use.

MS Office — make sure it has Word, Excel, PowerPoint. I like Outlook for e-mail. For business, Access might be good, too. Your college bookstore will probably give you the best deal. Otherwise shop via MySimon.com to compare prices.
