What can I do with a degree in nutrition? Psychology?

I’m heading into my sophomore year of college beginning this fall. I’m currently double majoring in biology and psychology with my eyes set on dental school after college.

I’m majoring in biology because the biology background will help with dental school admissions, while my psychology major is a backup plan for if dental school doesn’t work out.

Lately, I’ve been considering whether or not to change from psychology to nutrition. I’m interested in both fields, so the major factor in this decision is the types of jobs available to me after school with either degree. What can you do with a degree in either of these fields? Where are the salaries the best? Which industry is experiencing the greatest growth?

If I don’t go to dental school, I will pursue a master’s degree or more in my second major. What opportunities will this open up to me?

Many of the jobs you can get with a degree in nutrition are government jobs, so they won’t pay as much as psychology, but they are pretty stable. FIguring out the nutritional qualities of foods to put on the labels, developing balanced diets for schools, hospitals, etc. In corporations, you might design menus for the company careteria, do research into food quality, be part of a team developing new foods or food additives, doing safety research, or setting menus for restaurants.

Psychologists have a fairly wide set of possibilities. Private practice, school counselors, government agencies, research, hospitals, counseling centers, working with special needs kids, etc. Or you can go into sales, marketing, etc. Many of the top people in marketing divisions got a BS in psych and then an MBA.

Your current major in bio would tend to make the nutritionist route a little easier for you. Or you could take the psych degree and the biology background and go to med school for a degree as a psychiatrist.

Sounds like you have a lot of options.
