Not a whole hell of a lot, if its a bachelors. My brother graduated with an English degree, and spent the last 8 years working as a manager in a catering place, with bad hours and crappy pay. If you get your masters-doctorate, then you can become a professor. Or you can do what my brother has done, and go back to school after 8 years and get his teaching certificate to teach in an elementary school. There are a few other options, you can always try out sales, you can try to get a job writing for a newspaper or magazine, you can try to get a proofreading job, etc. Good luck to you.

With a bachelors in English, the most obvious career path is to teach. What most people don’t realize, however, is that the proven ability to write which an English degree affords you is very important to a potential employer in almost any field.

My degree is in comparative literature, a subset of English which includes foreign language and linguistics. During my final semester of college, I talked to many professors about potential opportunities. I was surprised to find out that I would be most welcome in the science and anthropology fields! As it turns out, most people who go into science-oriented career paths neglect to work on their writing skill, and being able to write about what you are doing and communicate it to people who are not experts is critically important. If you can write, you have a huge advantage over the majority of people, because most people cannot write.

The best thing for you to do if you are undecided is to talk to advisors at your school. Find professors that students love, because they are always the best help. If you can write, you can do pretty much anything you want, so don’t limit yourself to just teaching-type paths.

Good luck!

You have a valuable degree. Please apply for a job in any field in which you are interested. (Edited to avoid ending with preposition. I can not do that in this answer.)

You may be amazed to find how hungry employers are to find competent writers and perhaps speakers in any field. If you go six years and get your masters, your fields may be a bit more limited, but you salary will be higher. For some jobs there is such a thing as over qualification. With a doctorate, other fields open and your salary could be even more varied.

I hope all this makes sense to you.

You can apply for a teacher position in a TESOL institute (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Language). This in particular is in demand outside of the US. Especially with the BPO/call center boom in India/China/Philippines. Not sure though how big the salary is.

You could also go for a career in literature, print and mass media.
