That really depends on the time period. If you’re talking about Greek mythology, I say that the major themes are fate, hubris, and mankind’s interaction with their gods.

Greek mythology and ancient theater deals a lot with the concept of fate and whether or not people can change or escape their fate. The three fates are characterized as merciless, unrelenting, and concrete. A good example of this is the play Oedipus Rex.

Hubris is a type of pride that leads to one’s downfall. It’s often called a tragic flaw. Check out the story of Odysseus and his long adventure home, or read about the adventures of Hercules. Both would be a good example of hubris.

Greek mythology has wonderful stories about the attributes of the gods and goddesses. Greek mythology presents gods and goddesses that are fallible and human, so sometimes their interactions with humans are based on jealousy and pettiness, rather than the divine love that most monotheistic cultures believe in. Read the story about Zeus and Io, the judgment of Paris, Apollo and Daphne, and Athena and Arachne to get a good idea about how the gods and goddesses interfere with mortals’ lives.

Good luck!
