What are the negative aspects of elementary principal career?

I would say that one of the negative aspects of an elementary principal career is just running a school smoothly. From what I have observed, a principal must take care of school budgeting, teacher curriculum, any conferences and workshops they would like their staff to attend, and keep harmony and peace between all students, staff, and parents.

You, as an administrator are evaluated by the superintendent over what you have accomplished throughout the year and your job performance. You must attend every meeting in the district that is held so you are constantly updated on all situations.

Well, superficially, the pay is not very high. But I think there are more negative aspects psychologically. Schools are always under scrutiny, especially public schools if u choose that field. Principals must be held accountable for anything that goes wrong in their school, even if logically it seems like it should be more a faculty problem, or etc. Also, funding is horrible. You have to always pay attention to attendance rates, b/c funding is provided to most public schools based on these rates. And then you’ll have the angry parents who don’t understand, and will scream, “do YOU wanna stay home and take of my sick child?!” LOL, things like that.

But if you think you can handle it, and you love kids, I don’t see why not pursue it. every job has at least a couple of negatives, but it’s passion (and sometimes money unfortunately!) that drives us to our future careers!

Probably dealing with the parents…you know the ones, their kids are Absolutely Perfect? And then there’s the school board, particularly in small towns…you know the ones, they inspect every textbook looking for Satan, sex and socialism? In many ways, being an elementary principal is like herding cats…wouldn’t you rather work in a coalmine?
