In NYC, there are great programs at Parsons, the School of Visual Arts, Pratt, and also, if you’re interested, at the Fashion Institute of Technology, although that obviously has a fashion emphasis. Nice thing about FIT is that it’s part of SUNY, so you’ll pay the cheaper in-state tuition.
Another option is the Cooper Union. That’s a high power art school, very good reputation, and if you can get in (that’s a huge IF), their tuition is FREE.
If you care to look outside of NYC, also look at the programs at Syracuse, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Yale. You can also look at SUNY Purchase.
Maybe Oswego if you like working on computer mostly. University of Buffalo (UB) used to have an excellent illustration program. I don’t know if they still do.
