Native American. (Just a few links to wet your appetite.)

Geographic Overview

When complete these Histories will encompass approximately 240 tribal histories (contact to 1900). They will be limited to the lower 48 states of the U.S. but also include those First Nations from Canada and Mexico that had important roles (Huron, Micmac, Assiniboine, etc.).

There’s a great book called Vostaas: White Buffalo’s Story. It’s written by a Native American from Montana, giving the history of the tribes, reservations, and movement in and from that area. It’s written on about a 4th grade level and is meant to record the history and culture of the tribes for coming generations.

There are also some good Native American thematic units put out by Teacher Created Resources and other companies that are on a 3rd-5th grade level, I’ve used some of them with my son (9) and at Scout camp. The kids really enjoyed them and were able to tell about the significance of what they learned/made.

I know Denver Public Schools also has several of their lesson plan units available free on the internet – there are some good Native American units available through the Alma Project. Here’s the site:

Hope that helps!

Here’s an idea that just blows the kids minds.

I’m a California Indian, Enrolled tribal member. I went to my sons class, in full regalia, showed them how to make frybread, we danced, and i told them the story of coyote and crow.

Being there in Montana, I’m pretty sure you can find someone just like myself. Hit up the closest reservation and see who’s up for it. \

Most of us don’t ask for anything in return, for a traditional it’s not allowed to ask. You can gift something but it’s not ‘required’.

I’m going to guess you have some Indian students in your class. Reach out to them.

Good luck. Lemme know if you need any more help.
