What are English graduate school like?
I want to get a masters in English, but I didn’t really enjoy most of my English classes in college. Some were GREAT! The professors actually lectured and I learned so much. But most were like glorified book clubs with the professors breaking us up into small groups to discuss the works. I paid a lot of money to listen to unqualilfied nitwits wax philosophical about Hawthorne and Milton.
Are English graduate classes like this as well?

Yes but hopefully the students aren’t unqualified nitwits. That’s my answer.
You’ve got to understand that this “group learning” thing that your professors were doing was a pedagogical fad that came through the universities starting about 10 years ago. At little professor workshops, the professor who can stand up and say, “I break my classes into groups and they discuss Milton” is looked upon like some kind of hero. But I think it’s tapering off now for just the reasons you mentioned — if you get a bunch of morons in your group, your education suffers.

It was actually a negative for the majority. A major distraction and imbued with romantic literature about the wrong things. If i am interpeting your sentiment correctly, I spent far far too much time with famous writers and not as much with math, foreign languages and politics, job and career counseling etc. Busing, bad food, and sports were a huge budget buster for local schools systems. Hell, it is worse today. They should have training in interpeting corrupt and wretched media like CNN and how it is organized and who are the decision makers. Useless, untimely and bs. Either become learn and master a trade or engineering, accounting, political science and career development. You must eat and somehow succeed. A little goes a long way regarding the luxury time wasters. Life is real and young people need intensive preparation and sports stars and movies stars are for a very small aggregate.
