Transfering Colleges?

Im currently enrolled in Sonoma State University for this upcoming year. Im not expecting things to suck, but im also not expecting things to be amazing… My best friend, and I mean Life long friend, not just a current best friend, is going to SDSU, my first choice which got rejected… Im hoping to transfer there after a year if I can, but I dont know if that is not allowed, some people say you have to wait 2 years, others I’ve known got out in 1 and transfered to another school. I need advice, tips, and and answer. If anyone has been in this situation, tell me how to work the system or get out by one year. I would do anything to be able to attend SDSU by next year. So is it possible? Thanks!

I went to the Univ. of NE at Omaha for two years, then transferred to a private university for the last part of my degree.

My recommendations:

1) Get the “basic” coursework out of the way: Psych 101; English 101/102; etc — the coursework that is required for just about every degree in the nation. While you’re at it, polish up on those writing skills. It’s amazing how much you do write in the course of a degree — ANY degree.

2) Talk to SDSU to see what they would recommend that you take.

3) Find out WHY you were rejected. If it was your GPA, work on coursework that will GET your GPA higher. Don’t take “skate” classes, but get that GPA up. Let them see you are a serious student.

If you’re going to transfer in a year, do it this year. If you’re going to wait till your Junior year, do it this year, so that foundation work is laid.

No matter when you transfer, make sure that all the units you take at Sonoma State are transferrable to San Diego State. Even within the state university system, one school will not always accept all of the credits from another school.. You don’t want to be in the situation of making up units.

Also, check the major you want to be in at SDSU, If it is impacted, that also may prevent you from getting in. It is easier to get in under a non-impacted major and then change to the major you really want, than it is to get in under an impacted major.

Also, give Sonoma State a chance. You may find that you actually enjoy being there. Don’t choose a university based on where your friend is going. Choose it based on your needs for the future.

It depends completely of SDSU’s transfer policy. Most schools will let you transfer after 1 year, but will sitll look at your high school transcripts as well as your college transcripts so the outcome will most likely be the same. In order for them to consider you as a college transfer and not look at your highschool transcripts you will have to meet their minimum college transfer credit requirement which is generally 24 credits, but again it depends entirely on the school’s policies. I think that California has more strict transfer policies as well so you will need to check into that. If you do well in college you will be able to attend SDSU, but maybe just not as soon as you would like. Go Aztecs! (except when you are playing UNLV.)

My daughter transferred from Iowa State to the University of Wisconsin at the end of her Freshman year. The junior thing comes in because the school that you transfer to wants you to do at least 2 years of coursework at the institution that grants you a diploma. You can transfer sooner than that but not later (usually). Go where your heart leads you. Take your freshman year to study hard and get ready for your new school. The new school will love a transfer student with a great grade point average.

Getting into college depends on a number of things, including grades, class rank, SAT or ACT scores, etc. Once you are there, the important thing is to study moderately hard and get some good grades under your belt. I think if you could manage a B+ average (3.3), a transfer would be possible in even one year.

Best of luck!

Most schools prefer to only accept Upper Division transfers which require 60 units completed. Although nothing is set in stone, applying early is recommended and make sure your grades are top notch.

it may be possible after a year. i had a guy from sfsu come up after one year. maybe he had the units to transfer. maybe its because its the csu system and things run a lot smoother among campuses.

i dont know who to talk to about that… maybe admissions and records?

good luck in the fall!
