Depends on which state you live in but most are requiring a PhD or at least a masters.

You don’t need a PhD. A PhD is a research degree (7+ yrs after college). You need at least a clinical doctorate (only 4 yrs). You need a medical doctorate degree if you want to prescribe meds (4 yrs plus your residency, which varies). With a master’s you can be a counselor. Some do find employment with a bachelor degree, but it is highly unlikely, and not in the clinical practice.
