1 national service was a bastard of a idea
2 the war was very unpopular people didn’t agree with it so blamed the solders (unfairly as it wasn’t their fault) but they are recognized now & treated a lot better

Not really positive, but I think that I’ll be right in saying that the national serve was rather like the Draft, and of course that would lead to anti-war sentiment.
I don’t know on the second one, try looking up “the Vietnam War”. That could have gone without saying though, couldn’t it…

Use Wikipedia, and maybe for question 2 it was because the US/French/Vietnam Republic lost.
