As a male teacher in a female-dominated profession, I think there are positives and negatives. Female teachers are easier for most students to bond with, especially in younger grades. They also provide very positive role-models for girls by being the leaders in the classroom situation and by being “the shoulder to lean on” when a student needs answers. Women teachers have demonstrated their ability to handle challenges that would deter many.

The negative aspect is in relationship to how Society treats the profession. Originally, teachers were women, because it was a profession that could provide supplemental income. If a teacher was single, or was the ‘breadwinner’ in a family, then the pay was barely adequate for the first many years.

Again, as a male in this profession, I find myself perceived every September with curiosity and some discomfort. It takes a while for the students to realize that I don’t bite. As a male, I try to provide a positive male role-model. This is especially important for one-parent families, as the majority of those (I know there are many exceptions) have only a female adult in the household.

So, is having so many women as teachers a positive factor for the course of education? I think so. Education evolves, as do the roles of women in society. At least in education, women can make a definite and positive impact every schoolday.

I believe in all aspects of education is this. Anyone who takes up of becoming a educator has a heart to truly care for any student to succeed in life to come. Now to have any male figures of a teacher will always become a positive figure for doing so. I have done for myself a full school year of substituting in my hometown. To say the least, I’ve gotten the many comments of getting the mistake of being called “Miss”… It is a rarity to have male teachers in a younger classroom aged group of students. No matter who is teaching a classroom, male or female. It will always be proceed as a positive view.
