The setting is Newport, Rhode Island in the 1920’s. The mood changes throughout the book. It starts very upbeat, but as the story progresses, the atmosphere becomes more and more hopless as Gatsby realizes he’s not going to get what he wants. The setting is important, but not critical to the story.
