yes, it is commen for doctors performing medical evaluations for any government agency to administer a urine analysis which is aimed to detect canabonoids, amphetamines, opiats, barbituits, and depending on the position blood alchohol levels.

More and more places are now using hair testing. Don’t know about the state of CA specifically. I have a couple of friends who just finished the academy, but they didn’t say anything about it because they weren’t worried about not passing. But the reason to switch to hair is it is not so easy to fake it and because it is safer handling.
