Dear, have you checked into free money ?? There are free monies to be had simply for filling out some forms to prove your need. A high school guidance counselor could help you, or even a financial aid counselor at the college you wish to attend. Our government has grants, and so do most states…..some students get grants from both the federal and state governments. Best wishes !

There are many loans you can take out without your parents cosigning for them. You can even get free money for college that you don’t have to pay back.

Here are the steps you need to take:

1) Fill out the FAFSA. This will determine if you are eligible for financial aid. Go here:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

2) Once you are eligible for aid, choose a government-based student loan. The best loan to get is a Federal Perkins Loan. These have low interest rates and the government will help you pay it back as long as you stay enrolled in school. You also don’t need a cosigner or good credit for it. For more info go here:

3) The next best loan to get is a Subsidized Stafford Loan. This has many of the same benefits as a Perkins Loan. Learn more here:

4) You can also try to get a grant or scholarship, which is free money that you won’t have to pay back. Look here:

The best help would come from your schools Financial aid office. Since you are over 18, you can get student loans on your own if your parents are not willing. Make an appointment and explain your situation to your school. Did you complete a FAFSA form at the beginning of the year? You will most likely need to have your dad supply his information on this as well since you still live with him (I think until you are 23). If he is hesitant, explain to him that this could not only make you eligible for loans, but also get you scholarships and grants (don’t have to pay them back), he may be more willing to work with you then. If you are trying to get this done for the fall semester, you need to get on it ASAP!
